Willis Kitchen Remodel

New Seating AreaProject Description: Improve aesthetics and functionality of the kitchen while blending with the original gothic architecture of an extremely unique older  home.

Background: Prominent inventor and engineer, the homebuilder recruited craftmen from his homeland of Sweden to build this home in 1922. The architecture represents the European heritage with a touch of gothic character. The gothic architecture is prominent in the pointed arch doorways and frames, plaster crown molding, and Swedish coat-of-arms in the living room. Before this remodel, the home had only changed twice in 90 years. The structure has remained relatively untouched aside from a kitchen update in the 1950′s and a garage conversion.

Customer Wish List: Since the appliances were marginal in their functionality and the room was wrapped in the 1950′s hues of turquoise and chrome. With this in mind, the homeowners wanted a kitchen that: Blended with the gothic style architecture; Offered more workspace and storage; Did not lose heat in the cooler months; Flowed more naturally into the other rooms; Offered better view of their wooded propoerty; Provided a warm and cozy heart to the home.

Approach: Ater careful observation and analysisAfter an in-depth interview and site analysis, it was obvious that the space to work with was limited. The kitchen was bookended by a breakfast nook and mudroom, and it did not blend with the gothic elements of the original architecture. We needed to remove the separating partitions, widen the doorways to increase the open feeling of the space, and improve the flow and functionality of the room. This approach would give the homeowners what they wanted, in the way that they wanted it.

Results:  The clients were very happy with their new kitchen, with results fulfilling all of their hopes. We were able to provide them with all of the elements they had requested, and maximizing the space they never knew they had. The Willis family now enjoy a warm and cozy kitchen, shedding light on the beauty of the outdoors which surrounds their home.
